VTU student gets Gold Medal after four years.

The High Court has dropped the contempt petition against the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) following an undertaking given by Special officer to give gold medal to a student, who was deprived of it due to the delay in evaluation.

The petitioner S Harsha, a resident of Hiriyur and a student of Nitte Institute of Technology, had secured 82 percent of marks in the examination between 2003-05. He also completed his project work as it was mandatory for his course.

But the three evaluators appointed by the varsity delayed their work, and as a result his viva was delayed and the results were announced.

The petitioner, after he lost his gold medal due to negligence of the University, moved the High Court in 2006, which in July 2008 directed the University to give him the medal and certificate during the 2009 January convocation.

When the varsity failed to do so, the petitioner filed a contempt petition. During the hearing K S Nagendra, Special Officer VTU filed an undertaking to adhere to the High Court order. The division bench headed by Justice N Kumar has dropped the contempt charges against the varsity.

Barely 24 hours after stepping down as Director of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal, YV Rao did a U-turn on Thursday, claiming that he had resigned under duress.

Notwithstanding his retraction, the students not only faxed his resignation to the Union Human Resource Development Ministry but also despatched a team to New Delhi to submit a memorandum to HRD Minister Kapil Sibal and other board members of NIT.

Sibal’s deputy Purandeswari told reporters in Visakhapatnam that an inquiry had been ordered into the allegations against the NIT administration. ‘‘Appropriate action will be taken, once we get the report,’’ she said.

This is not the first time that YV Rao finds himself in the eye of a storm. Earlier, during his stint at the Regional Engineering College in Surathkal, Karnataka, Rao had tampered with the answer- sheet of his colleague’s son and failed him.

Soon after on Feb 25, 1999, the REC Board of Governors passed a resolution against assigning any academic or administrative responsibilities to him

YV Rao, the disgraced director of the prestigious National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal who has allegedly siphoned off around 60 crores meant for NIT has offered to resign from his post.

Today he had to face lot of unanswerable questions from the NIT students and at last he let his signature of a blank paper and gave it to the students and asked them to treat it as his resignation letter.

Yesterday about 2,000 students residing in various hostels on the campus came out openly alleging large scale misappropriation of public funds by director Y.V. Rao. The students alleged there was no water supply on the campus and the food was of very poor quality which forced nearly 600 students go out everyday.

The students allege that a building of 1000 beds was given for construction to Nagarjuna constructions for 70 crores while the building could have been easily built with just 15-20 crores. “The director is supreme in all matters. He takes unilateral decisions and snubs whoever questions him,” the students allege.

The students also alleged that since the past few months the illegal activities of the director have grown exponentially and he has amassed huge funds.

It is nice to see that the students are not prepared to let corruption take place in the campus said the local leaders present there.
